Passage of act for relief of sick and disabled seamen, established federal network of hospitals for the care of merchant seamen. -
Medical Malpractice Lawsuits Begin
Between the years of 1835 and 1865 medical malpractice lawsuits began popping up all over the United Sates. People felt like surgeons were trying to save their limbs instead of amputating. These decisions caused deformities such as crooked or shortened limbs. By 2014 there was just short of 9,000 medical malpractice claims in the United States.

Appointment of first Surgeon General
Appointment of the first supervising surgeon, John Woodward, of the first marine hospital service -
Conversion of the marine hospital service into the Public Health & Marine Hospital service
in recognition of its expanding activities, the marine hospital service was converted. In 1912 the name was shortened to Public Health Service. -
Soldiers Rehabilitation Act of 1918
When soldiers came home from World War 1, they came back with several disabilities and injuries that needed rehabilitation. This new legislation provided funding for soldiers to live on and also to train them for working class jobs and real world activities. This was one of the first ways the government paid for people to get rehabilitation due to an injury. -
International Congress of Sports Medicine
A committee formed the International Congress of Sports Medicine to help with the prevention of injuries. -
National Institute of Health

The first successful arthroscopic surgery performed
This procedure was performed by Dr. Watanabe in Japan. Through a small incision, arthroscopy gives surgeons more access while damaging less soft tissue. -

Dr. J.C. Kennedy organized a group of doctors to create the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine. This is the first official team of physicians, coming about because of the summer olympics. -
American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine
AOSSM established as the first group of orthopedic surgeons. -
Exceptional Student-Athlete Disability Insurance Program
This allows qualified student-athletes to purchase disability insurance in case of a loss that negatively affects their ability to earn wages as a professional athlete in the future.
