Nonfiction Text Features Unit
Introductory unit to nonfiction text features. This a approximately a 3 week unit. I will teach one lesson every Wednesday. Each lesson is 50 minutes with exception to the introductory mini lesson. -
Think About The Text
When we first teach students to notice and pay attention to their thinking as they read, listen, or view, we choose text that gives them a lot to think about. Books with interesting ideas and information that kids can connect to and question offer a great jumping-off point for thinking. Tommy dePaola's book The Art Lesson is a great book where students can look, listen, talk, write, and draw to express their thinking. Length of activity: 50 minutes -
Notice and Think About Nonfiction Features
When teaching readers to notice and think about nonfiction features and recognize their purposes, we search for text that is full of different kinds of features. We look over magazines, newspapers, and online material to find as many examples of photographs captions, maps, graphs, charts, diagrams, headings, and other visual and text features. These are the first features I will teach my second graders and collaboratively create an anchor chart. Length of activity: 50 minutes -
Explore Nonfiction Features
When teaching students to create Nonfiction Feature books, we surround them in nonfiction text that is full of text and visual features. The more students are exposed to new text and visual features, the more they will pay attention to them and use them when they read, write, and explore online content. The goal of this unit is to immerse them in features of every possible type so they will become familiar with them and learn from them. Length of activity: 50 minutes
