Evolution of Cell Theory

  • Hans and Zacharias Janssen

    Hans and Zacharias Janssen
Invented the first compound microscope. Zacharias (pictured) is given most of the credit for this invention. However many people believe is father, Hans Janssen, created the first model while Zacharias took on the production of this new technology.

    Evolution of Cell Theory

  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
He looked at a sliver of cork through a microscope and noticed certain "cells". He was the first person to use the word cell while refering to the small structures seen with microscopes.
  • Francesco Redi

    Francesco Redi
The Italian scientist conducted an experiment to discover if flies were created from rotting meat. He proved that flies could only come from other flies and were not created from meat.
  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

    Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
The first person to see and describe bacteria using microscopes that he made himself.
  • John Needham

    John Needham
Explained that soup that was exposed to air had tiny micro organisms inside of it. He claimed that there was life in all inorganic matter that had access to air and oxgyen.
  • Lazzaro Spallanzani

    Lazzaro Spallanzani
Tried variations of John Needham's soup experiment. He discovered that soup that was left in a closed container had no micro organisms and that they entered from the air.
  • Robert Brown

    Robert Brown
Discovered the nucleus inside of cells.
  • Matthias Schleiden

    Matthias Schleiden
With the help of Theodor Schwann, Schleiden created part of the cell theory. This states that all living things are made up of one or more cells.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
Worked with Matthias Schleiden to create the cell theory of life. He also conducted experiments that disproved the theory of spontaneous generation. He showed that yeast were tiny organisms. He also believed that fermentation was a biological process.
  • Rudolf Virchow

    Rudolf Virchow
Published that "every cell stems from another cell". He also believed that disease involved changes in normal cells.
  • Louis Pasteur

    Louis Pasteur
Conducted an experiment that showed that soup was only spoiled by air that was not filtered. He used a flask with a long S-shaped neck (pictured), micro organisms settled in the neck and did not spoil the soup. He also helped to develop the first vaccines.
