Industry vs. Inferiority
I made the decision at the age of 17 that I was going to live on my own without my parents help. In Erikson's fourth stage, industry vs. Inferiority, you must learn how to survive in your own culture. Skills and knowledge create a feeling of industry for excelling at those certain tasks. If you fail at being competent in these skills, you will develop a sense of inferiority. -
Generativity vs. Stagnation
Before starting college, I decided to join a volunteer fire department to give back to the community. In Erikson's 7th stage, generativity versus stagnation, describes the ability to provide and care for others. Putting others needs before your own will give you a sense of pride and fulfillment. By failing generativity, we will become stagnant and feel unproductive. -
Identity vs. Identity Confusion
3 years after high school, I finally made this decision to pursue tertiary education. I developed an interest and set a goal to pursue learning more about the medical field. In Erikson's fifth stage, identity versus identity confusion, we must find who we are and what we are capable of doing. If we don't figure out our spot in society, we will often become confused. -
Intimacy vs. Isolation
It's always important to develop intimate relationships with friends and family or lovers. In Erickson 6 stage, intimacy versus isolation, he explains that we must explore and commit ourselves to another human being. A sense of vulnerability and trust are just some aspects of a healthy intimate relationship. Not developing an intimate relationship will leave an individual feeling isolated.
