Congress passed a patent law to protect the rights of inventors. A patent gives an inventor the sole legal right to make money from an invention for a certain period of time. -
Eli Whiteny
Eli Eli Whiteny invented the cotton gin to get the cotton of multiple slaves. It quickly and easily removed the seeds from picked cotton and allowed a huge increase in cotton production. -
Lowelles improvements
Lowell's Massachusetts textile, or cloth, factory not only made thread, it also wove the thread into cloth. Lowell began the factory system, in which all manufacturing steps are combined in one place. -
Missouri as State
Missouri had people from Kentucky and Tenese who wanted it to become a state where slavery was legal. Representative James Tallmadge proposed that Missouri gradually abolish slavery in order to be admitted to the Union. The House passed this plan, but the Senate blocked it. Having Missouri as a free state would put the proslavery states at a minority. -
Erie Canal
Millions of people helped build the 363 miles long canal. Many people died from disease, blasts, and natural disasters. People raised boats in down hills. Clinton had the first barge on it full of buffalo.
