Cave Drawings
The first cave drawing from the Stone Age was in Altamira, Spain. Most of the cave drawings were made with red or black pigment. While it is not certain why they were made, most people think the drawings may have been part of religious rituals. -

Invention of Writing
Writing was invented by the Sumerians in 3500 BC. They invented writing as a means of long distance communication which became necessary because of the trade between the cities in Mesopotamia. The writing was called ''cuneiform''. They used symbols to represent sounds. -

Paper was first made in China by Ts'ai Lun in 105 BC. It was made from mulberry bark, hemp, rags and water. -

Gutenberg Inventing Press
Elements of Gutenberg's invention are thought to have included a metal alloy that could melt readily and cool quickly to form durable reusable type, an oil-based ink that could be made sufficiently thick to adhere well to metal type and transfer well to vellum or paper, and a new press. The invention of the printing press in Europe in the 15th century was a truly disruptive technology, making written knowledge much more freely available -
Magic Lantern
The magic lantern was invented by Christiaan Huygens. It was the earliest form of slide projector. Christiaan was not proud of his invention. He even told his dad “……I feel ashamed that this way it will be known that they come from me. People are kind enough to feign admiration, but later on they will ridicule it, and not without reason.”. -
The Horn-book
The hornbook was a wooden paddle with letters and numbers on it.Some forms of the hornbook had a sheet of parchment paper glued to one surface. -
The Blackboard
James Pillans, headmaster and geography teacher at the Old High School in Edinburgh, Scotland, is credited with inventing the first modern blackboard when he hung a large piece of slate on the classroom wall. -
The Sandbox
Students would use a sandbox on their desk to practice the alphabet. Students would draw the alohabet with their fingers on sand. After the students are done with drawing letters the monitor would smoothe the sand with a flat iron. -
The Typewriter
Christopher Latham Sholes built the typewriter which became known as the first practical typewriter in 1867. The first typewriter had no shift-key mechanism—it wrote capital letters only. -
The Filmstrip Projector
Filmstrips were used to show educational films in classrooms, serving as a predecessor of videocassettes, DVDs and Blu-ray technology. -
Skinner's Teaching Machine
The “machine” was composed of a fill-in-the-blank method on either a workbook or on a computer. If the student was correct, he/she got reinforcement and moved on to the next question. If the answer was incorrect, the student studied the correct answer to increasing the chances of getting reinforced next time. -
The Overhead Projector
While the dates for this invention are not certain most sources believe that it wa smade in 1960's by Roger Appeldorn. The first form of overhead projector was called episcope and it appeared in the 1940's. -
The First Form of Internet ARPANET
The precursor to the Internet was jumpstarted in the early days of computing history, in 1969 with the U.S. Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). ARPA-funded researchers developed many of the protocols used for Internet communication today. -
The First Interactive SMART Whiteboard
First interactive whiteboard was created by SMART Teach in 1991. Original concept was to create a device that could function as both a whiteboard and a computer. -
The Present
Technology is playing an increasingly large role in education. There are two major needs to be met. The first is using technology to help improve the learning experience for students and the second is getting students prepared to use technology to better navigate the world. The technologies you can see in current educational system are modern computers, email, internet, smart phones, tablets and electronic files and storage. -
