ECI 416 Timeline

  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

On this date, the first volume of my favorite book, Little Women, was published.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

Although this court case is known for specifically targeting racial segregation in schools, it was broad in its message of education for all and the notion that separate is not equal. In this regard, it had a major impact on special education. This gave parents a case against schools that were discriminating against their children with disabilities.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA)

ESEA was enacted by Lyndon B. Johnson as part of the "War on Poverty". In an effort to help poor families and other underprivileged children (including students with disabilities), the law enforced a free and reduced lunch program, as well as an increased teacher force for low-income schools. This law further enforced and improved education for all.
  • Pennsylvania Association for Retarded Children (PARC) v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania

This was a landmark case in ensuring students with disabilities right to a free public education. This case also ensured that students with intellectual and learning disabilities received all their education needs.
  • Congressional Investigation of 1972

In this congressional investigation, the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped found that out of the 8 million students requiring special education services, only 3.9 million had the appropriate education, 2.5 million were receiving inappropriate education, and 1.75 million had no educational services at all. With over half of the students being underserved, the investigation highlighted the need for more legislation to protect and ensure the education of all students with disabilities.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act and Section 504

This law prohibits organizations receiving federal funding from discriminating against people with disabilities which applies to students in public schools. This act also defines the right to a "free appropriate public education".
  • Public Law 94-142: The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975

This law again establishes a free and appropriate education for students with disabilities. The education must be in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and include an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Education of Handicapped Act Amendments

These amendments broadened the age of students with disabilities protected under the Education of Handicapped Act to include 3-5-year-olds. It also requires early intervention programs from birth to 2 years old.
  • Parents Met At the University of Alabama

This was the year my parents met while they were in college.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004

These most recent amendments to IDEA focus on higher teaching standards for special education instructors and more money for early intervention programs. With further protections, these amendments seek to meet every student's needs while protecting their rights and the rights of their parents.
  • Hope Academy Volunteer

For a month this summer, I volunteered at a charter school's summer camp and it was when I realized I wanted to become a middle school teacher.
  • NC State Enrollment

In April of 2021, I officially enrolled at NC State.
  • ACE Certification

On this day, I passed my certification exam through the American Council on Exercise to become a fitness instructor.
