  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    The United States Supreme Court decided in the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka that it is unconstitutional for children to be denied the right to education due to their race. While this had nothing to do with special education specifically, it spearheaded the justice laws leading up to rights advocating for disabled students.
  • Timothy was Born!

    Timothy is my dad.
  • ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Act)

    Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Elementary and Secondary Education Act into law as a part of the "War on Poverty". This act ensured equal access to education and funding for students experiencing poverty.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia

    This case is directed towards students that are deemed as "exceptional" in the District of Columbia. Now the D.C. Board of Education are, by law, not allowed to deny these students access to funded education.
  • All Handicapped Children Act

    President Gerald Ford signed this act, also known as Public Law 94-142. This law requires all states that accepted money from the federal government to then provide equal access to education for "exceptional" children and be provided one meal per day.
  • Public Law 99-457

    An amendment to the All Handicapped children's act that mandated that individual states provide relief to families of children born disabled from the time of birth. Prior to this act, these services were not available until the child was three years old.
  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    Ronald Reagan signed the Handicapped Children's Protection Act. With this act, parents have a voice in their children's IEPs since they know their child best.
  • Public Law 101-476 changes Public Law 94-142

    Public Law 101-476 is also referred to as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. In this act, traumatic brain injury and autism were added and IEP's or ITP's were required to help students transition into the next phase of their educational journey.

  • IDEA amended by Congress

    With Congress Amending IDEA, earlier intervention for students, improved accountability, greater educational outcomes, and higher standards for special education instructors followed. Also, it required states to demand local school disctricts to increase up to 15% of their special education funds towards general education if it was deemed that large numbers of minority groups were in special education courses for purposes aside from disability.
