John Haldane
John was born on November 5, 1892 in Oxford, United Kingdom. He researched how ezymes worked and eventually published his work with G. E. Biggs in 1925. His work included the Birggs-Haldane equation. When conducting experiments, John would use himself as a test subject. On December 1, 1964 because of cancer. -
Aleksander Oparin
Aleksander Oparin was born on March 2, 1894 in Uglich, Russia. Aleksander majored in plant physiology at Moscow State University. He proposed that life could come from prebiotic soup like oceans. His experiments and proposals inspired people such as Harold Urey to conduct experiments. This in return taught people about DNA and other things that were shown through experiments. On April 21, 1980 he died. -
Oswald Avery
In Halifax, Nova Scotia on October 21, 1877 Oswald was born. When he was young he played the cornet and was so good at it that he won a scholarship to the National Conservatory of Music. Oswald and his team discovered that DNA is an active agent in genetic transformation. On February 10, 1955 Oswald died. -
Erwin Chargaff
Erwin was born on August 11, 1905, He was born in Chernivsti, Ukraine. He discovered that the amount of adenine and thymine in DNA were the same and the amount of guanine and cytosine in DNA were the same. This was later known as Chargaff's Rule. Erwin was a member of the National Academy of Science. He died on June 20, 2002 at the age of 96. -
James Watson
James was born in Chicago Illinois, USA on April 6, 1928. He helped build the first accurate model of DNA and wrote "Molecular Biology of the Gene." -
Francis Crick
Francis Crick was born in a small town near Northampton, England. On June 8, 1916 he was born. He got a second-class Honours degree in physics at University College, London. He worked with James Watson to help build the first accurate model of DNA. On July 28, 2004 Francis died. -
Linus Pauling
Linus was born on February 28, 1901 in Portland Oregon, USA. He figured out the structure of proteins because he made the mistake of thinking that hereditary information with in them instead of DNA. In 1961 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign against nuclear testing. On August 19, 1944 he died. -
Rosalind Franklin
Rosalind Franklin was born on July 15, 1920 in Notting Hill, London, United Kingdom. She worked with Maurice Wilkins to get DNA to crystallize and make an x-ray pattern. On April 16, 1958 she died of because of cancer. -
Maurice Wilkins
Maurice was born on December 15, 1916 in Pongaroa, New Zealand. He moved to England with his family at the age of six. At one point in his life he was a physics lecturer at St. Andrews' University. He worked with Rosalind Franklin to get DNA to crystallize so they could make an x-ray pattern. He died on October 5, 2004. -
Stanley Miller
Stanley was born on March 7, 1930 in Oakland California, USA. He helped write "The Origin of life on Earth." He worked with Harold Urey to conduct experiments that showed that organic compounds such as amino acids can be easily made. On May 20, 2007 he died. -
Harold Urey
Harold was born on April 29, 1893 in Walkerton Indiana, USA. He worked at the University of Chicago. During this time in 1953 he worked with Stanley Miller to conduct experiments. These experiments showered that organic compounds, like amino acids, clould be easily made. Their experiments inspired further experiments, such as Juan Oro's. Juan found with his experiments that DNA and RNA bases can be acquired through stimulated prebiotic chemistry with a reducing atmosphere. He died Jan. 5, 1981.
