Lisp was created by John McCarthy when he was attending MIT. It was first created for mathmatical notation in computer programming. The name comes from LISt Processing. -
COBOL
COBOL was designed by a medium sized team, but the largest contributor would be Grace Hopper. Cobol was designed for business and finance reasons. COBOL stands for COmmon Business-Oriented Language. -
RPG
RPG was developed by IBM. It was intended for use in Business applications. -
BASIC
John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz designed BASIC language to attract more students to an easier computer programming language to understand, other than math and science majors. BASIC stand for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. -
LOGO
Logo was created by Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon. It was made for education, and remembered mostly because of turtle graphics. The name is derived from greek. -

Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie created this language, it was developed from BCPl but some elements were stripped from it that the creators felt weren’t needed, so that it could fit on minicomputers. Could be named after another language, Bon, that Thompson also created. -

PASCAL was created by Niklaus Wirth. This language was created for the purpose of having a small/efficient language to make good programming practices more popular. -

ML was developed by Robin Milner. ML stands for MetaLanguage. The language was created to develop proof in certain instances. -

Raymond F. Boyce. This language is for managing data. SQL stands for Structured Query Language. -
ADA
Jean Ichbiah was the head of a team that created this language. It was developed to take the place of the several languages being used in that time for the US Department of Defense, and was named after Ada Lovelace. -
C++
Created by Bjarne Stroustrup, is another general purpose language, meaning it is used in several instances. -
Python
Python was created by Guido van Rossum, for the purpose of allowing progammers to express more, in less lines of code. It is a general purpose high level programming language. It got its name from a comedy series named Monty Python's Flying Circus. -
Visual Basic
Visual Basic was developed by Microsoft. It is based off of BASIC, and provides a very user friendly program to.. program! -
Java
Java was designed by James Gosling and
Sun Microsystems. It is the most popular used language, as of 2014. It was originally designed for Television companies in the 90s, but was too advanced for them at the time. Java was named after Java coffee, what the team that created it consumed regularly. -
JavaScript
JavaScript was designed by Brendan Eich. It is used in webpages, and is very popular. It was originally named LiveScript, but was changed to JavaScript when added support for Java was put in place. -
PHP
PHP was created by Rasmus Lerdorf, with the purpose of web development, but can also be used for general use programming. PHP originally stood for personal home page, but now is hypertext preprocessor. -
Delphi
Delphi was created by Borland. It is essentialy an alternative to visual basic.
