The Difference Engine
The modern computer age began when a British mathematician named Charles Babbage started building machines which used gears to do complex maths. One of his most pioneering invention was the Difference Engine, an automatic mechanical calculator designed to tabulate polynomial functions. However, this machine was not powered by electricity. Colossus computer
Colossus was the world's first electronic digital computer that was programmable. The Colossus computers were developed for British codebreakers during World War II to help in the cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher. This invention was paved the way of programmable electronic computers.
