Civil War in Texas Battles

  • Battle of Galveston

Texas fought at Galveston because it was a very important battle as Galveston was an important port. Paul O Herbet and John Bankhead Magruder led the Confederacy in their battle against the Union Navy. The battle ended in a victory for the South, so the Confederacy was able to keep Galveston. (The battle lasted two months so I used the date as the ending time)
  • The Battle of Sabine Pass

This battle was fought in the southernmost spot on the border between Texas and Louisiana. This was an important battle for Texas because it was right at the entrance to the Sabine River, which was one of Texas' most important areas. After all, they used it to transport people and troops inland and out to sea. Dick Bowling led the Confederacy against the Union Navy, and the Confederacy won allowing them to keep the Sabine River.
  • The Battle of Palmito Ranch

This battle was in Cameron County, Texas, and the location was significant because there were useful Confederate camps there. Theodore Barrett led the Union, and John Ford led the Confederacy. The Confederacy were heavily outnumbered, but somehow they still won. This was the last battle of the war, funny because the Confederacy won it, but once Texas got word that the rest of the states surrendered, they surrendered, knowing they couldn't beat the Union by themselves.
