    The Kansas-Nebraska Act allowed citizens to choose if its state was a free state or slave state through popular sovereignty.
    Fighting broke out and is known as Bleeding Kansas. Some argue that this was the first battle of the civil war.

    Davis was elected President after the Confederacy was formed. Davis became the first and only President of the South.

    Fort Sumter was a Union controlled fort in Confederate territory. In 1861 Lincoln sent troops to resupply the fort and the two sides exchanged ammunition at the end of the battle the fort fell to the south. Fort Sumter is officially known as the first shots of the Civil War.

    Antietam is the first battle to be fought on Union soil. The Union wins and defends their territory allowing Lincoln to pass the Emancipation Proclamation. However, winning comes a cost Antietam is the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

    The Confederate army defended their territory and defeated the Union in the Battle of Chancellorsville. However the South lost Stone Wall Jackson in the battle.

    The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the most important engagement of the war. The Union defeated Pickets Charge and forced Lees force to retreat. This battle is considered one of the turning points in the war.

    After the Union victory at Antietam Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. It freed all the slaves in the rebelling states.

    Union General William T. Sherman led soldiers on a March to Sea in the South. The purpose of the march was to devastate the South and to frighted the people from supporting the Confederacy.
