Chris McCandless's Journey

  • My Rebellious Beginning

    My Rebellious Beginning
I left college and set off for Colorado. I was tired of doing what I was told and expected, and wanted to do something for myself for once.
  • First Stop

    First Stop
I make it to Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada.
  • Left alone

There were some terrible flash floods. I have needed to abandon my car, and carry all my belongings as I continue afoot.
  • Canoe

I have used some of my money to buy myself a second hand canoe. I plan to use it to travel along the Colorado River
  • South of the border

I have reached the Mexican border, a pretty big feat. I can't wait to see what adventures I may stumble upon.
  • Rolling down the river

    Rolling down the river
I have encountered very large waterfalls on the Colorado River
  • Down Under

    Down Under
Wayne! I almost drowned in my canoe today. There were some pretty violent storms around, not making this the best experience. I guess that's the price I have to pay to do what I want.
  • Busted!

    Busted!
This is a first. Trying to cross the border back into the U.S., I was caught by the U.S. Immigration officials and had to spend the night in jail. Just another accomplishement to add to my "acts of rebellious teenager must haves checklist".
  • Camping the weight away

I met a nice couple this weekend, and we went camping at the bottom of the Grand Canyon together. I really do enjoy these types of things, where I can be free to do what I want. As a side note that you may not like, I have lost over 25 pounds. I truly want to take care of my body, but I see no way.
  • Disappointment

Yes, the rumors are true. I had to ask for my friend Franz's help. I asked him to pick me up from Coachella. Even "troublemakers" need help out of rough spots sometimes.
  • What happens in Vegas

    What happens in Vegas
I have decided to leave Las Vegas today. There is nothing more for me here. Time to continue my adventure elsewhere.
  • Working for a living.

I have arrived in Bullhead City, Arizona and have gotten a job in a McDonalds. Just the place any delinquent ends up working.
  • Period: to

    A Job? From Who?

You! You have given me a job at your grain elevator. I will always be grateful for you and for anybody else who has ever helped me along my journey.
  • Being studious?

    Being studious?
I have taken up on reading the different types of edible plants. I may be rebellious, but I'm not stupid. To survive, I have to know what I'm doing, and what I'm getting myself into.
  • A Bus?

    A Bus?
I have found a bus in these woods. It is oddly comforting so I may stay here awhile. Enclosed is a picture I have taken of myself beside the bus.
  • Period: to

    To kill an animal

To survive I have killed and eaten squirrels, a moose(which i sadly had to abandon), spruce grouse, and other wild animals.
  • The crown is missing!

One of my crowns have fallen off a molar. Wayne, that is definitley not something I expected.
  • Home sweet home

I have arrived back at the bus. This is a great comfort to me.
  • 100 DAYS!!

Wayne, I have finally made it! 100 days out in the wild! Though this is an accomplishment I have been looking forward to, I cannot last as long anymore. I am far too weak. I have learned so much on my journey. If I survive this, I will never take anybody for granted
  • S.O.S.

    S.O.S.
Wayne, I am starting to feel very weak, but I still have enough energy to go on for a few more days.
  • The End

    The End
I spend my final days here in the bus. I'm sorry to say that I'll never see you again, my friend. I just want you to know, in the beginning, I truly believed my trip would be worth it. Now, I can see I have taken it too far.
