Cell Theory Timeline

  • Hooke

    Hooke
He was the first person to discover the cell. He made this discovery by examining very thin slices of cork and saw a multitude of tiny pores. He called them cells. This was the first observation of cells ever made.
  • Leeuwenhoek

    Leeuwenhoek
He was the first to see and describe bacteria, yeast plants, and the circulation of blood corpuscles in the capillaries. Leeuwenhoek used lenses primarily used by drapers to inspect the quality of cloth, and he created the very first microscope. His discovery is better than the last because he discovered many different types of cells, by using a simple microscope.
  • Brown

    Brown
Brown discovered the nucleus in a plant cell. He discovered this by studying the motion of molecules within a cell under the light of a microscope. His discovery is better than Leeuwenhoek's because he identified the center of the cell.
  • Schwann

    Schwann
Schwann is credited with creating the actual cell theory from his studies. Also, he discussed with Schleiden to find that all living things including animals, are composed of cells. His discovery is better than the ones preceding him because he found that all living things are made of cells.
  • Schleiden

    Schleiden
He became the first to formulate what was then an informal belief as a principle of biology equal in importance to the Atomic Theory. Different parts of plants have cells. Also, he found the concept of cell division by the study of plants and the use of a more advanced microscope. His discovery is greater than the others because he identified cell division.
  • Virchow

    Virchow
He suggested that cells come from pre-existing cells. He stated that cells were not just formed but they came from cells tat were already there. He also studied plants and used a microscope to conduct his studies. Virchow, unlike the others was able to prove that cells came from pre-existing cells. Also, his statements were a key part of the cell theory.
