Robert Hooke
Hooke was an English scientist who looked at a piece of cork through a compund microscope. He observed what looked to be tiny chambers or "cells". He only obsereved the outer walls of the cells becuase the cells were dead. -
Francesco Redi
He was an Italian who disproved the theory of spontaneous. This was that spoiled meat attracted flies not make them, Only flies can make more flies. -
John Needham
He theorized that a life force was present in all inorganic matter including air and oxygen that could casue spontaneous generation. He was later proved wrong when the cell theory became more accepted. -
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
He improved magnification of microscopes by polishing lenses. He also discovered "animacules" and discovered bacteria from a sample of saliva from his mouth. He also looked at micro fibers under a simple microscope. -
Lazzaro Spallanzani
Proved the micro-organisms that spolied in soup were air-born-futher proof that cells can only reproduce like cells. He studied the theory of spontaneous generation of cellular life and helped disprove it. His work was helpful to Lois Pasteur. -
Robert Brown
Robert Brown was a Scottish botanist. He discovered the nucleus in cells and stressed the importance in fertilization. -
Theodor Schwann
Schwann was a German physiologist who discovered animals were made up of cells. He then realized that all living things were made up of cells which is the first thing in the Cell Theory. -
Rudolph Virchow
He was a German physician who is known as "The Father of Modern Pathology". He stated that all living things once come from other living things which is the third section in the Cell Theory. -
Matthias Schleiden
Matthais Schleiden was a German botanist who studied plants under a microscope. He discovered plants were made of cells which is the second section of the Cell Theory.
