Peninsular War
In November of 1807 the French invaded Portugal.The official reason for the invasion was Portugal denied to enforce the blockade of British trade which was known as the Continental System, but it also gave Napoleon a chance to infiltrate his armies into Spain, in preparation for his attack on that country in 1808. -
Brazilian Independence
Independence Day(Sete de Setembro) is the National holiday of Brazil. Independence Day honors the birthday of the nation. On 7th September 1822, Brazil claimed its independence from the hands of the Portuguese. On 7th September 1822, Prince Pedro stood near Brazil's Ipiranga River and made an announcement of independence. He tore the Portuguese symbol from his uniform and declared, "By my blood, by my honor, and by God: I will make Brazil free." After that Pedro became the Emperor of Brazil. -
Cisplatine War
The April 1825 invasion of the Banda Oriental launched from Argentine territory by a group of Uruguayan patriots, the Thirty- Three Immortals (also sometimes referred to as the Thirty- Three Easterners, or Orientals), sparked an insurgent movement in the disputed area as they were joined by several thousand supporters. Acrimonious charges were leveled by Brazil that Argentina had provided material support for the invasion. -
War of Triple Alliance
War of the Triple Alliance, also called Paraguayan War, Spanish Guerra de la Triple Alianza, Portuguese Guerra da Tríplice Aliança , (1864/65–70), the bloodiest conflict in Latin American history, fought between Paraguay and the allied countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Paraguay had been involved in boundary and tariff disputes with its more powerful neighbours, Argentina and Brazil, for years. The Uruguayans had also struggled to achieve and maintain their independence. -
Golden Law Abolishes Slavery
Brazil was a major desination of the Atlantic slave trade. Brazil justsout into the Atlantic and was thus a much shorter run for the slavers. Brazil had the largest slave population in the world, substantially larger than the United States. Pedro II was a ruler of conservative mindset. He came to see slavery, despite its economic importance to Brazil as inherently evil. Pedro began a series of measures liberating Brazilian slaves. He was posed to entirely abolish slavery. -
Rebulican Constitution
Brazil has had eight constitutions since independence in 1822, beginning with the constitution of March 25, 1824. The republican constitution promulgated on February 24, 1891, was very similar to the United States constitution, containing separation of powers, checks and balances, a bicameral legislature, federalism, and direct elections. -
Brazil Enters WW1
People in Brazil were clamoring for war due to the (technically not illegal) sinking of the Rio Branco in 1916. Brazilian exports were not wartime goods. The Brazilian ansd the Germans were friendly until the Germans bombed peaceful coffee carrying Brazilian ships killing three people and angered the whole country. -
Constitutional Revolution
A conservative insurgency in 1932 was the key turning point. After the July 1932 "constitutionalist" revolt—a veiled attempt by the paulista coffee oligarchs to retake the central government—Vargas tried to recover support of the landed elites, including the coffee growers, in order to establish a new alliance of power. -
Brazil delcares war on axis powers
70 Years Ago Aug. 22, 1942: Brazil declares war on Germany and Italy after 16 ships lost to U-boats, opening airbases to cover Allied shipping and opening South Atlantic air route. Germans reach northern suburbs of Stalingrad. -
First Steel Mills
The country has been producing steel since the 1920s and 1930s, when companies were established in the states of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. One of the biggest incentives came in the end of the 1940s, when former president Getúlio Vargas created Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), State company with the goal to encourage the national production of steel in order to reduce imports. Vargas commits suicide
Dr Vargas, who shot himself through the heart, left a dramatic suicide note that was broadcast on national radio just two hours after his body was discovered. -
Parliment system established in Brazil
A parliment system was created that limited presidential powers. Not just one person was invovled in government now. -
Divorce legalized
With the new changes, a person who got married last week may get a divorce today. Previously, this was impossible, it was necessary to be at least one year married to request a process of separation or two years to get straight to the divorce. -
President Impeached
750,000 people braved a rainstorm Friday night to demand the impeachment of President Fernando Collor de Mello. -
The US dollar was introduced
In 1994, Brazil inherited th US dollar. Now a good part of Latin America either acepts or uses the us dollar.
