    On July 25, 1819, a rebel army of about 3,000 men under generals Bolívar and Santander surprised the Spaniards in Pantano de Vargas. Because it was in a swamp, the skirmish was nicknamed by the locals the Swamp Battle. After the surprise attack the rebels took over.

    The Battle Of Boyaca was fought to free New Granada from Spanish control. The battle took place on August, 7, 1819. It resulted with the Spanish losing control of New Granada.

    On August 7th 1819 Santander cut off the Spanish advance force near a bridge over the Boyacá River. Mean while Bolívar fought the main force about half a mile away. Bolívar then captured Bogotá on August 10 and was praised as the liberator of New Granad.

    After the battle on August 10th, 1819 Bolívar set up a new government. He gave Santander the position of vice president and acting head. After that Bolívar then went to Angostura in Venezuela, where he announced his scheme to establish the Republic of Gran Colombia.

    On the orders of Santander, Colonel Barreiro and 38 more were executed in Bogotá on October 11, 1819. This was after their capture in the battle. Santander was able to do this because of his leadership in the government.

    Battle Of Boyaca Day

    The battle is remembered on August 7 with, funnily enough, a ‘puente’, which as well as a bridge is also the way to say a bank holiday. Celebrations kick off early in Bogota. Although it is largely celebrated it is not known when it started.
