  • 4.3: Language

My first word was spoken in Spanish at 6 months old. I said "agua", the English equivalent of "water". My native language is Spanish because my parents both immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico shortly before I was born so that is the language they grew up with. I'm not sure why my first word was what it was, but I do know that I loved playing in water so that might have something to do with it.
  • 3.1: My Health

I've only been severely sick once -- when I was about 2 1/2 years old. I honestly don't remember/know much. I was hospitalized for a few days. I had caught an infection in my stomach, but it spread throughout my body. I became extremely dehydrated and needed to be monitored constantly to ensure my vitals were good.
  • 4.1: My First Memory

One of my earliest memories is around the age of 4. This is most likely due to infantile amnesia which creates a gap in memory during the early stages of life. In this particular memory, I recall being at the park with my teammates, learning how to play soccer. I can't remember too much of it, but I have a general idea of the situation.
  • 4.2: Intelligence

Out of the eight kinds of Gardner's intelligences, I believe that I am most skilled in verbal-linguistics. One of the characteristics I possess is that I began speaking at a very early age. By the age of 4, I could read and write in Spanish. Shortly after, I began learning English and quickly developed my skills in the language. From there on out, throughout the rest of my life, I've always academically excelled in language arts.
  • 4.3b: Language 2

I truly don't remember the process of learning English. Perhaps this might be due to infantile amnesia. I remember that I would speak gibberish to my mom and pretend that it was English. Then, once I started school at the age of 4, I began actually learning English.
  • 4.3c: Language

When I started school, I was in a classroom designed for Deaf and HoH students. There I learned very few signs because I was being pushed towards speech therapy and oralism. I think my first sign might've been "mom". I never used ASL outside of the classroom, so when I was mainstreamed after that year, I stopped using it altogether. At the age of 18, I attended JumpStart at Gallaudet where I actually learned fundamental ASL. Then I became a student in January 2016 and have been signing since.
  • 3.2: Older Adult Health

My dear grandpa was diagnosed with cancer about 4 years ago. Thankfully, he was able to be diagnosed in the early stages so he went through with surgery and treatment to have it removed. This greatly affected me because at the time I was so worried about losing him. As a result, my family became more aware of our health and our diet. We began eating a lot healthier and trying to eat as organic as possible. We also tried to include some kind of physical exercise in our daily routine.
  • 1.1: The Present -- Sept. 6, 2016

    1.1: The Present -- Sept. 6, 2016
My name is Angie Escamilla and my chronological age is 19 years old. I'd have to say that my biological age is about the same, maybe 20 years old. I'd consider my psychological age to be approximately 25 due to several non normative life events that I've experienced. My social age is definitely in sync with my chronological age (19). One of the major things that maintains my social age is the normative age-graded influence of attending college.
  • 2.1: Fertility

Scenario: My husband and I are unable to have children due to infertility. His sperm is incapable of fertilizing my eggs.
Solution: We would look into genetic counseling to see if there is any way pregnancy is possible. If that is unsuccessful, perhaps we would try to go for adoption.
