Jefferson worried that French settlers would block westward-moving pioneers. He sent officials to France to ask to sell Louisiana. The emperor of France, Napolean Bonaparte, agreed, because he wanted war against Britain. On April 30th, 1803, the deal was made final- $15 million for over 800,000 square miles. -

The Mexican Cessions Happen!
When the USA beat Mexico in the Mexican-American War, Mexico sold President Polk most of the missing land in the present day US (the yellow area), with just a portion of Arizona and New Mexico left. The States paid Mexico $15 million, the same price as Louisiana, for it. Five years later, in 1853, they sold the remaining land for the same price. -
The Compromise of 1850
California wanted to be a free US state. However, that would mean more states would be free, and less had slaves. (gasp.) So Henry Clay made a compromise in 1850. California would be free, but the Fugitive Slave Act was in place everywhere. This meant former slaves were denied rights to a trial by jury, and more officials enforced this law. Because of this, many slaves fled to Canada. -
The Kansas-Nebraska Act
Western settlers wanted a Nebraska, but Southerners didn't because slavery would not be allowed, as it was north of the 36 degree 30` line. North of that line slavery was abolished. Stephen Douglas of Illionois did want Nebraska, so in 1854 he proposed that the citizens of Kansas and Nebraska could decide. The MO Compromise (the line) had prevented the Civil War for 34 years, and the KS-NB Act just denied it. How? In Kansas, fighting broke out. More trouble was definetly soon to come.
