University at Albany President George Philip revealed the administration's decision to quash the study of Russian, Italian, French, the Classics, and Theater from the curriculum.

Holding posters and shouting their dissatisfaction, students gathered at the uptown campus to protest Philip's announcement and the University's plan.

Following a week of bitter critiques, President Philip took the time to describe the process by which the controversial decision was made. Several interest groups met over the course of two years to analyze the course of best fit, considering the decreasing aid from New York state.
Phiilip emphasized the University's committment to the humanities, highlighting the remaining 13 language majors, and their corresponding topical courses in literature/culture. -
The President reached out the following week to let the UA community know that a website had been established to better answer our myriad of questions.

University Provost and VP of Academic Affairs Susan D. Phillips reached out to discuss the fate of students persuing a degree in any of the five programs being phased out. Declared majors and minors would be able to continue their study, as long as coursework is can be completed by May 2012; new admissions to the 5 programs has been suspended.

Clarry Fyer contacted members of the University on October 29 to encourage our participation and cooperation with efforts to "TAKE BACK OUR UNIVERSITY!" There will be a rally on campus from 5-7pm.
