they created a new supply depot for their return journey, they had 42 dogs left to pull 4 sleds

It took them 10 days to climb an unexplored 300m glacier in very good weather, At the top he chose 18 dogs to go on and shot the rest

The team reach the south pole. They had 17 dogs and 3 sleds, first they set up camp, then they skied for 3 days in a 16km radius from the south pole point to make sure of the correct position.

Scott's tired, starved ponies were shot, some of the men were snow blinded and fell down crevasses.

Scott had a five-man team, but their supplies had only been planned for 4 people

The five starving men reached the South Pole, only to find Amundsen had beaten them by 33 days

Oates limped out of the tent during a raging blizzard saying, "I'm just going outside, and i may be some time."

The blizzard lasted 8 days and took the lives of the remaining men just 18km from their supply depot

Scott's second to last diary entry read:
Since the 21st we have had a continuous gale WSW and SW. We had fuel to make 2 cups of tea apeice and bare food for 2 days on the 20th. Every day we have been ready to start for our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent remains a scene of whirling drift. I do not think we can hope for any better things now. We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end can not be far.
