fram docked Madeira in Spain and Amundsen sent a tekegram to scott that he was going to the south pole insted. The crew was excited to be challenging scotts team -

Three days out, they were hit by a ferocious gale that lasted 36 hours and nearly sank the ship. -

Scotts old hut on Ross island was blocked by ice, so new winter quaters were built at Cape Evens, also on Ross island. Next Scott organised the setting the settingup of depots and a telephone line between Cape Evens and point hut in less then a week. Amundsen and his team took a good year to do the same. -

Amundsen and his crew reached antarctica, he carefully chose the Bay of whales to set up his base camp and dock his ship, as it was blocked from the winds, and had a stable shore line. It was 100kms closer to the south pole than scotts base camp, but it ment going unkown territory. -

The team built the wooden hut they bought with them which they named Framheim after there ship. During the 5 months of winter, from april to september, 9 men carefully set up 3 different depots so that they would not have to carry extra supplies on the expadition -

amundsen's team of five men and fifty two dogs set off on there race to the south pole. They had travelled the most direct route going over any thing that got in there way, and travelled 32 kms each day -
1 november 1911 Scott
Scott and his polar team left on their race to the south pole with fourteen men on two motor sleds, ten ponies and two doggie sleds. Scott had decided that they would ride motor sleds and ponies untill they could go no further and thenhaul the supplies by foot for the rest of the way. The motor sleds soon broke down and the horses keps sinking through the ice and snow. The weather was miserable with blizzards. -

they reached there last supply depot, 772kms from the pole. -

they created a new supply depot for there return journey, they had 42 dogs left to pull 4 sleds -

it took them ten days to climb an unexplored 3000 meters mountain glacier in very good weather amundsen named them after his norweigen queen, maud. At the top, they took 18 dogs to go on with them and shot the rest. -
9 december 1911
the tired, starved and frozen horses were shot. The men had to pull their own sleds through the deep snow. Some men were snow blinded and some fell down crevases. -

the team reached the south pole. It was a glorious moment for the men and norway. They had 17 dogs and three sleds. First they set up camp, then over three days, they skied in a 16km radius from the south pole point to make sure of the correct position. Only then did they plan the Norwegian flag. -

Scott chose felow explorers, Edward wilson, Lawrence Oates, Edgar Evans and Henry Bowers to accompany him. The supplies had only been planned for aa four man team. -

the five exhausted men and starving men reached the south pole only to find that admundsen had beaten them by 33 days. Now they had to survive there journey back to base camp in bad weather. -

Oates limped out of the tents during a big blizzard, saying I'm just going outside and I may be some time. he did not return. -

the blizzard lasted eight days and took the lives of the remaining men, just 18km from there next supplie depot. -

they were not discovered until the next summer when the search party dug out the almost completly buried c amp. Among their posetions were 16 kg of rock samples.
