Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir takes power
Islamic Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir of the Sudanese Army takes power from the curent government in a military coup. He became the Prime Minister.
He is still in office today, elected as president in 1993. -

Three years of intense negotiations between
SPLA and Khartoum over the future of
southern Sudan. -
Peace Agreement
SPLA chief John Garang and Sudan's lead government negotiator sign a comprehensive peace accord ending a civil war that claimed the lives of more than 2 million. The civilian death toll is one of the highest of any war since World War II. -
John Garang is Vice President
Former southern rebel leader John Garang is sworn in as first vice president. A constitution which gives a large degree of autonomy to the south is signed.
Three weeks later, Garang dies in a helicopter crash in southern Sudan. Members of SPLA vow to faithfully implement the peace plan their leader signed. -
Southern Sudan's new government
Autonomous government is formed in the south, in line with January 2005 peace deal. The administration is dominated by former rebels.
