It wasn't exactly a war. It was more a campaign to show power. Both countries wanted to be more powerful so they kept going until the fall of the soviet Union in 1991. -

A war fought to stop the spread of communism. Us Americans don't like communism so we sent troops to Vietnam. Half of Vietnam was communist while the other wasn't. We fought for the side that wasn't communist to try and stop the spread of it. -
