Erie Canal
The Erie Canal was started in 1817 and was completed in 1825. it linked the Alantic Ocean with the Great Lakes, which made trnasporting goods faster and cheaper. -
Railroad
This was known as the "iron horse" and was the only thing that was bigger than the erie canal. The railroad wasnt used to its full potential until the 50 and 60's. by then, there were over 30,000 miles of track laid. -
Mechanical Reaper
Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper whihc made cutting wheat a lot faster and efficent. this helped to make the entire process of cutting and selling wheat quicker, which in return, yeiled more profits. -
Steel Plow
John Deere invented the steel plow. this hlped farmers a lot because it was a lot stronger than the traditional wooden plow, a little lighter, and wouldnt rot like wood does. -
Caroline Incident
An American ship, the Caroline, was attacked ny Cananaians by the Niagra Falls. This angered many Americans because newspapers sowed pictures of the ship going over the falls. -
Commonwealth v. Hunt
This was a major coyrt case because it helpoed to establish labor unions, which gave the people some power over the factory owners. -
Aroostook War
the Aroostook War was a dispute between America and Canada over the MAine border. the border was eventually settled about half way between where the two countries recognized the border. The dispute wass ettled by the Webster- Ashburn Treaty. -
Telegraph
Samuel Morse invented the telegraph which greatly helped to improve communication. a message could be transmitted trhough wires over several miles in just a few minutes while it could take a letter several days or even weeks to be delievered. -
Morse Code
Samuel Morse also invented Morse code as a way to translate the telegraph messages. they are a series of dahses and lines which translate into numbers. -
Texas
The United States added Texas in 1845. this was a great success for America because it ensured that Britain could not come onto North America. -
Oregon Dispute
Oregon was disputed territory between Britain and America. They settled on the 49th parallel as the boundary because their were more Americans than there were British. -
Wilmot Proviso
The Wilmot Proviso did nothing but reopen the issue of slavery. Itg proposed that the newly accquired Mexican Cession lands be closed to slavery. The south did not agree, so it was never put into action. -
Treaty of Gudalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Gudalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American war. it ave America the Mexican Cession lands for only 10 million. America forced Mexico to sell these lands. Trist was the American who got the treaty. -
California Gold Rush
the California GOld Rush was important because it gave California enough people to apply to become a state. They applied as a free state, which would tip the balance of free to slave states. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was a better deal for the North. Tyhe North got California addmitted as a free state, which gave the North the majority vote. This means that the North could eventually get rid of slavery.
