The Louisiana Purchase
It introduced about 828,000,000 square miles of territory from France into the United States. A major reason for purchasing this territory was to secure the port of New Orleans. The United States could now gain control of the port of New Orleans, and control the Mississippi river. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
It all started when Thomas Jefferson tasked Lewis with exploring lands west of the Mississippi river that compromised the Louisiana Purchase. The importance of the Expedition is that it altered the struggle for control of North America, by strengthening the U.S. claim to areas now including the states such as Oregon and Washington. -
Battle of the Alamo
It was a 13-day siege where Mexican troops under President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna reclaimed the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Bexar, killing texan and immigrant occupiers. Santa Anna's cruelty inspired many texans and immigrants to join the Texan Army. -
Texas's Independence
Texans wanted to to declare independence from Mexico because they were unhappy with the laws created by Santa Anna. It wasn't just the American settlers, but the Tejanos, Mexican who lived and worked in Texas, that felt this way. They both banded together to fight for their independence. -
Gold Rush
James Marshall discovered gold on the American River in northern California, while he was working on a sawmill. When the news that gold was found leaked out, there was a mass migration to California, and a fortune of gold was mined.
