The Treaty of Tordesillas
This treaty essentially ceded Brazil to the Poruguese while keeping the rest of the world to Spain, therefore laying the frame work for the modern demegraphics of Latin America. -

Spanish Conquest
In 1519, Hernando Cortes and his troops marched into the interior of Mexico. Until they reached Tenoctitlan. By 1521 Cortez and his men had completly conquered Mexico. -
Massive Earthequake in Chile
Massive Earthquake destroys the city of Santiago. -
Toussiant L'Overture leads slave rebellion.
In the 1790s, Toussiant led a slave rebellion in Haiti and took over the goverment of the island. By 1804, Haiti had achvied independence from France. -
Independece for Brazil
After Brazils defeat over Napoleon many Brazilians wanted indpendence. But Portugal wanted it to remain a colony. Finally many Brazillians signed petitions asking Dom Pedro, the son of Portugal's King to, to rule Brazil as an idependent country. He agreed, and in September of 1822, he declared Brazil's Independence from Portugal. -
Onis Treaty
Also called the Transcontinental Treaty of 1819, the Adams-Onis Treaty was one of the critical events that defined the U.S.-Mexico border. -
Columbian Independence
Colombia got their independence from Spain. Simon Bolavar played a very big role in this event. -
Mexican Independence
Mexico achieved independence frome Spain under Agustin de Iturbide, who proclaimed himself emperor in 1822. -
El Salvador becomes independent
In 1821, El Salvador was independent from Spain. -
Ecuador's Independence
Ecuador got their independence from Spain, and once again Simon Bolivar has a big role. -
United Provinces split.
By the late 1830s, the United Provinces had split into seperate nations. These became El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Honduras. -
The Mexican-American war
Mexico went to war with the United States in 1846 after a series of skirmishes on the border. The Americans invaded Mexico on two fronts and captured Mexico City in May of 1848. -
Cinco de Mayo
After defeating the French Invasion, Mexico was free. -
Panama Canal was built!
The Panama Canal was built between 1904 to 1914. The Canal cuts through the land bridge and connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. -
Mexican Revolution
The Mexican Revolution starts with Generals Zapata, Villa, Madero, Huerta, and Carranza. -
Reggae is developed
Reggae developed in Jamaica in the 1960's . Many reggae songs deal with social problems and and religion. Bob Marley of Jamaica was a pioneer of of reggae. -
Raul Alfonsin takes office in Argentina.
Raul Alfonsin was elected president of Argentina in that nation's first free election in many years. He along with his goverment was faced with a ruined economy after years of millitary rule. -
Mercosour
Mercosour is an economic common market that started operating in 1995. It began operating in the cone of South America. -
Vecente Fox takes offcice in Mexico.
In 2000, Vicente Fox became the first non-PRI president since the adoption of Mexico's constituition in 1927. -
The War of the Pacific
In 1879, Chile and Bolivia went to war after spending decades bickering over a border dispute. As a result of the war, Chile gained the disputed coastal province once and for all, leaving Bolivia landlocked, and also gained the province of Arica from Peru.
