    The the first time a human contracted Zika was in Uganda due to a mosquito bite.

  • First Zika outbreak

    Prior to this outbreak, there had only been 14 recorded human Zika cases. The outbreak occurred in the Yap Island where more than 70% of the residents were infected. Scientists believe that the island was so heavily impacted because their residents lacked proper immunity.

  • French Polynesia outbreak

    During this specific outbreak, two sets of mothers and their newborns were infected with Zika through the delivery process (transplacental transmission). This was the first case involving this mode of transmission.
  • First blood transfusion case

    During the French Polynesian outbreak, over 1,500 blood donors tested positive for Zika, which concluded that blood transfusion is another mode of transmission.
