One million Japanese’s troops during the war were engaged in an unsuccessful attempt to save china. They failed because they waited too long to attack because they were waiting for assistance from other nations.

  • Rape of Nanking

    Rape of Nanking
    Japanese General Matsui ordered for the city of Nanking to be destroyed. The Japanese army burned most of the city. The army had killed 150,000 war prisoners, 50,000 civilians, and they raped 20,000 young girls and women of any age. Once WWII ended, General Matsui was executed because he was found guilty for his crimes.

    Germany's invasion of Poland
    Hitler wanted to regain lost territory and to rule Poland by bombarding Poland on land and by air. He would do this by destroying his enemy’s railroads, communication lines, and dumps. Germany and the USSR divided Poland and treated Polish citizen’s brutality. Hitler began the persecution of the Jewish population.

    German Blitzkrieg
    Blitzkrieg is a military tactic designed to create disorganization among enemy forces through mobile forces and firepower. When this was first tested in less than six weeks the German army crushed forces of four nations. With the quick attack this helped overrun Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, France, and other countries later down the road. They liked this way of fighting because it was fast and effective.

    Fall of Paris
    Germans told the Parisians that they had to be in their home by 8 pm that evening. A couple of days previous Churchill tried telling the French to stick up for themselves, not to let the Germans win. Paul Reynaud asked the U.S. to send help as soon as possible or else Paris would be destroyed. They sent material over but they wouldn’t get involved because of Hitler. 2 million Parisians accepted Paris before the Germans came.

    Operation Barbarossa
    Adolf Hitler launched his army eastward to invade the USSR. The Nazi’s wanted to enslave the Slavic population and exterminate the Jews. Hitler and the Nazi’s were defeated by the USSR because they had about 9 million men were Hitler had 3 million. Hitler’s first major defeat was Barbarossa and this led to the end of Nazi Germany.

    Pearl Harbor
    Japanese fighter planes attacked American naval bases in just two hours. The Japanese destroyed 20 American navel vessels, 8 battle ships, and over 300 airplanes. About 2,000 American soldiers died right away and 1,000 were wounded.     Wannsee Conference
    Nazi officials meet to discuss details of the “Final Solution” of the “Jewish questioning”. During the meeting Heydrich proposed the idea to transport all Jews from every corner into a concentration camp in Poland and to work them to death. Some didn’t agree because it wouldn’t kill the Jews fast enough. They later on decided to use “gas vans” for a faster effect and they were killing 1,00 Jews a day.

    The day after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invasion of the Philippines began. The Filipinos and Americans had to surrender and were rounded up by the Japanese. They would make them do a 5 day march without food and they would beat them at the same time. America gained its defeat in the Philippines of Leyte Island on October 1944

    Battle of Stalingrad
    This battle stopped the German advance into the USSR and marked the turning point to the tide war. Soviet forces crushed a German army under General Paulus’s watch. Later on, General Paulus surrendered with his remain army of 91,000 men. The Germans had lost 150,000 men during the battle of Stalingrad. The Soviet victory was great humiliation for Hitler.

    Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
    Jews started a revolt against deportations to extermination camps and this inspired others to do the same. More than 400,000 Jews were confined in such a small area that disease and starvation killed thousand. On April 19th SS officers were sent with heavy tanks to eliminate the Warsaw ghetto. During the ghetto uprising 7,000 Jews died and the rest were sent to labor camps.

    British bombers invaded Hamburg with an aircraft that dropped 2,300 tons of bombs in short amount of time. Britain’s first raid of bombing killed more than 1,500 German civilians. They used aluminum foil strips so the Germans couldn’t track them, but this only worked for a short time. Over 30,000 people were killed and 9,000 tons of explosives were dropped. dropped.     D-Day (Normmandy Invasion)
    Roughly 156,000 British, American, and Canadians forces landed on 5 beaches across a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast. More than 5,000 ships left England for the trip across the English Channel to France. The British and Canadians wanted to capture the beaches: Gold, Juno, and Sword and the Allied troops had successfully stormed Normandy’s beaches.     Operation Thunderclap was to bomb the Eastern cities of Germany to disrupt the transport of facilities behind what was going to be the Eastern front. Thunderclap was originally
    to attack Berlin and they planned on having 220,000 casualties with 110,000 deaths. Instead of boming Berlin they decided to bomb the German city of Dresden. The Allies killed 60,000 civilians.

    Iwo Jima all started because the Americans wanted a base near the Japanese coast. About 23,000 Japanese army and navy troops fought for Iwo Jima from caves, dugouts, and tunnels that they thought were hard to destroy. All of the Japanese except 1,089 prisoners who didn't surrender, died during the battle.     Battle of Okinawa
    Okinawa provided the Americans with an invaluable air and naval base which launch a forceful attack on the mainland. During the 82 day period more than 90,000 Japanese troops were killed. The Americans had 25,598 men wounded. The U.S. would jump of 150ft cliffs or drown in the ocean because they didn’t want to be Japanese prisoners. Most of the island was taken over by the Americans, but the Japanese were able to win the battle.

    Great Britain and the U.S. celebrated victory because they defeated the Nazi war. The German troops in Europe finally surrendered to their Soviet enemies. The Germans had lost more than 8,000 soldiers. About 1 million Germans were taken captive by the Russian after trying to have a mass exodus to the West when fighting in war.

President Harry Truman wanted to use the atomic bombs to end the war with Japan quickly, so more American lives would be saved. These bombs killed so many people by direct contact or by radiation poisoning. Some people believed that eh other reason the bombs were used to demonstrate the mass of destruction they could make.

Japan finally surrendered to the U.S. after two huge bombs were dropped.

    The Bulge was to split the Allied armies to surprise blitzkrieg through the Ardennes to Antwerp. There were 250,000 soldiers that participated in the attack and they had to cover 80 miles of woody forest. The Germans had an advantage because they would use the English-speaking commanders to sabotaged American lines. They would U.S. uniforms, trucks, and jeeps to pretend to be American soldiers.
