Japanese invasion of China
As time progressed Japan wanted revenge for how they were treated in the past. The United States decided to step in the picture when Japan invaded China due to its population. Although the U.S. made Japan felt weak and embarrassed. This will soon lead to Japan attacking Hawaii. -
German Blitzkrieg
German Blitzkrieg or also known as the lightening war, is an anglicized term, describing a method of warfare. However the speed and flexibility of the German Wehrmacht took the Allies completely by surprise at the start of World War Two. Germany used this to show their military strength, confuse the enemy, and push into France. This was a reason the Allies double their efforts, but they were still puzzled and pushed back. -
Germany's invasion of Poland
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the invasion. Since Germany invaded Poland they went against the Treaty of Versailles. Thus, WWII started, with most nations joining what they called the League of Nations. England and France were the first to declare war on Germany. -
Fall of Paris
Hitler was eager to follow up his victory over Poland in 1939 by attacking in the west. On May 10 1940, German air raids on Belgium and Holland, followed by parachute drops and attacks by ground forces. However, the success of the blitzkrieg approach led the Germans to rely even more heavily on their next major operation. Although this time the strategy failed, with consequences for the Nazi regime that were ultimately fatal. -
Operation Barbarossa
Operation Barbarossa was a German invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II that started on June 22, 1941. Over 4.5 million troops of the Axis powers invaded the USSR spreading along an 1,800 mile front. Barbarossa was the turning point in World War II, because its failure forced Germany to fight a two-front war as the Russians pushed them back. -
Pearl Harbour
December 7, 1941 started out as just any other day so they thought. Japan composed a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour, Hawaii at 7:55am. The Japanese done this in hopes of revenge of the US' involvement in Japan's invasion of China. This angered the US and brought their thoughts into joining the war as an ally to the Allies and an enemy to Japan. This will soon lead to the US using an atomic bomb on two Japanese cities. -
Wannsee Conference
The Wannsee Conference was a meeting of senior officials of Nazi Germany, held in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee. They gathered to discuss the problem of Jews and how they affect Germans. They came to the decision to deliberate kill the Jews. This is known as the Holocaust. The Holocaust resulted in the deaths of over 6 million people. This is a tragedy that can never be forgotten. -
Battle of Midway
America had another victory at the Battle of Midway. U.S. troops attacked Japan for revenge of Pearl Harbour and the lives and ships that were lost. The battle led to one of the many U.S. victories and marked the turning point in the war in the Pacific Theatre. -
Operation Gomorrah
British bombers raid Hamburg, Germany, by night in Operation Gomorrah, while Americans bomb it by day in its own “Blitz Week.” It damaged German morals and killed thousands of people. It also signified an ending of the war and the German loss -
Allied invasion of Italy
The British Army began the Allied invasion of the Italian peninsula, crossing the Strait of Messina from Sicily and landing at Calabria the “toe” of Italy. On the day of the landing, the Italian government secretly agreed to the Allies’ terms for surrender, but no public announcement was made until September 8. German forces in Italy surrendered on May 1, and six days later all of Germany surrendered -
D-Day (Normandy Invasion)
D-Day also known as Death Day is a series of battles fought on the beach of Normandy. More than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of coastline, to fight Nazi Germany. 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. -
Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge, was called this because the Germans created a “bulge” around the area of the Ardennes forest in pushing through the American defensive line. They used a blitzkrieg-type of attack,to attempt to gain control of necessary land that would make the war easier. Although, the Germans were defeated in this war, and the Allies won. -
Operation Thunderclap
Operation Thunderclap was also known as the Firebombing. The plan envisaged a massive attack on Berlin in the belief that would cause 220,000 casualties with 110,000 killed, many of them key German personnel, which would shatter German morale. It destroyed a few cities on its path of destruction. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The American invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II started from the need for a base near the Japanese coast. Following elaborate air and naval bombardment, three U.S. marine divisions landed on the island in February 1945. It was a hard battle for the Americans, but was fatefully won and was a victory for America. -
VE Day
VE Day also known as Victory in Europe Day, was the date of which WWII ended. Germany surrendered and all over the world people were celebrating. This raised the high spirits of people who had been affected any way shape or form by WWII. It quickly brought Germany to surrender. -
Dropping of the atomic bombs
The deadliest weapon in history was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Hiroshima was bombed first on 6 Aug. 1945, and Nagasaki second on 9 Aug. 1945. These bombs killed millions of people, and many suffered after by burns. Japan surrendered unconditionally and the war in the Pacific was over. -
VJ Day
VJ Day also known as Victory Over Japan Day, is the day that celebrates Japan's surrender to the Allies. Celebrations happened all over the world in many different ways. From Pearl Harbor to Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan surrendered to the Allies and brought the conflict end. As a result, WWII ended offically, and the world could celebrate. -
Battle of Okinawa
This was the last battle and the largest battle of WWII. Kamikaze-type warfare was used by the Japanese, however it did not help them win. America won but it was a costly victory. Japan began to accept defeat and led them to surrender.
