Japanese imperial army marched into china's capital city of Nanking and proceeded to murder 300,000 civilians. They wanted to control all of china and the Rape of Nanking was one of the battles that was fought. They agreed to a safety plan were refugees were not attacked. -
German's invasion of Poland
1.5 million troops invaded Poland along its border. They bombed polish air fields and boats and u boats attacked the navy. They declared war on Germany on September 3rd. This started the second world war. -

German term for lighting war. A military tactic to create not organized environments in enemy armies. To sum it up it is attacking quick and hard with no mercy. -
Fall of Paris
2 million Parisians had already fled before the Germans invaded. The Germans seized the Belgium fort of Eban Emael. The British and French responded to the original attack by putting into operation the plan that advanced the river dial in Belgium. In a two day battle the Panzers crossed the river. -
Operation Gomorrah
Hitler launched his armies in a massive invasion of the soviet union. Over 2 million soldiers invaded. It was a crucial turning point because the Germans lost. They lost because of the bad weather that they were not prepared for. -
Pearl Harbor
100 Japanese fighter planes attacked pearl harbor near Honolulu Hawaii. It only lasted 2 hours but they destroyed nearly 20 vessels and 8 enormous battle ships. More then 2,000 soldiers were killed. the day after the assault FDR asked congress if he could declare war on japan. 2 Years after that the US entered WWII. -

The US surrendered to the Japanese the peninsula of Bataan. The US was forced to march 65 miles in the Philippines. America avenged their defeat with the invasion of the island of Leyte in October 1944. They recaptured the peninsula of Bataan -
Battle of Midway
The US defeats Japan in a major navel battle. Permanently damaged the Japanese navy. It was a major turning point in the Pacific campaign. The Japanese were trying to sink aircraft holders that were not sunk in the Pearl Harbor attack. -
Warsaw Ghetto uprising
Residence of the Jewish Ghetto had a rebellion against the Nazis and Jewish internment camps. 400,000 Jews were shot and the Ghetto was sealed off by brick walls and armed soldiers. Warsaw was the largest Ghetto in the Poland. Sickness and starvation killed thousands every month. -
D-Day
Eisenhower was in charge of operation over lord. Operation over lord was deception operation intended to make the Germans think the invasion was going to happen in a different place then it actually was. The date was suppose to be June 5th but it actually happened June 6th. 156,000 allied troops including the British, Canadians and the US. By June 11th the beaches were fully secured. -
Battle of the Bulge
German armies launched the deadliest and most desperate battle in the war in the west. US armies suffered 100,000 casualties. It was the most costly action ever fought by the US army. Hitlers objective was to split the allied armies in the northwest Europe. -
Liberation of concentration camps (Auschwitz)
They entered Auschwitz to find tons of sick and exhausted Jews. They freed everyone and gave them cloths, shoes and food. The Nazis attempted to get rid of all the evidence of their crime but it was far to big for it to just disappear. The prisoners had mixed feelings, some were overjoyed to be free and others felt guilty of their survival. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
The US invaded and stemmed from the need for a on the Japanese cost. Defended by 23,000 Japanese army and navy troops. The navy and army groups fought from a system of cave, tunas and underground installation. The US won after a month of battle. -
Battle of Okinawa
Last and biggest pacific island battle of WWII. The US out numbered Japan. The US won although there were lots of casualties. Both Japanese and US generals died during the battle. -
VE Day
Both Great Britain and the United States celebrate victory of over defeating the Nazi war machine. German troops around Europe laid down their arms. The Russians took around 2 million prisoners in the period just before and after the Germans surrendered. The Soviets lost 600 more soldiers in Silecia before the Germans finally surrendered. -
Potsdam Declaration
They agreed to give Japan the opportunity to end the war. The President of the United states, the President of the National Government of the Republic of China and the Prime Minister of Great Britain all attended. -
Dropping of the atomic bomb
Harry Truman had to decide to use the atomic bomb to make Japan surrender unconditionally. On August 6th a plane called the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Two days later on August 9th a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. On August 14th the Japanese surrendered. -
VJ Day
Japan had surrendered. Stands for Victory over Japan day. Japans Germany declared war on the US. Emperor Hirohito urged his people to accept the surrender. They blamed the most cruel bomb.
