(July 17, 1942-Feb. 2, 1943)
What: major tuning point in the European war. It was the successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad.
Why: Hitler attacked the city because it was a major industrial city.
Effects: The city was destroyed. The soviets defeated the german army.

Japenese invasion of China (1937)
What happened: ON JULY 7, 1937 a clash occurred between Chinese and Japanese troops near Peiping in North China.
Why: Japan was eager for the natural resources found in China.
Effects: The effects of this was 10 to 20 million Chinese civilians deaths.

Rape of Nanking 1937
In December of 1937, the Japanese Army marched into China's capital city of Nanking and murdered 300,000 out of 600,000 civilians and soldiers in the city.

Germany's invasion of Poland (1939)
Why: Adolf Hitler seeks to regain lost territory and ultimately rule Poland.
What happened: extensive bombing early on to destroy the enemy’s air capacity, railroads, communication lines, followed by a massive land invasion with overwhelming numbers of troops, tanks, and artillery.
Effects: Once the German forces had plowed their way through, devastating a swath of territory, infantry moved in, picking off any remaining resistance.

Japanese Internment (1942)
What happened: Japanese Americans were forced to leave their homes and live in internment camps. These were like prisons.
Why: The military felt that the threat of a Japanese invasion was very realistic.
Effects: Over 127,000 United States citizens were imprisoned during World War II.

Battle of Iwo Jima (945)
(19 February – 26 March 1945)
A. major battle in which the U.S. Marines landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II.Started beacuse the need for a base near the Japanese coast. the marines wiped out the defending forces after a month of fighting.

Battle of Okinawa (1945)
(April 1—June 22, 1945)
Involved the 287,000 troops of the U.S. Tenth Army against 130,000 soldiers of the Japanese Thirty-second Army. Last and biggest of the pacific island ballter of WWII. Japanese forces changed their typical tactics of resisting at the water’s edge to a defense in depth, designed to gain time.

Drooping of the Atomic Bombs (1945)
On 6 August 1945 a US bomber dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing around 80,000 people. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, causing the deaths of 40,000 more.
