France was one of the main Allied Powers, alongside Britain and Russia. Much of the action along the trenches of the Western Front occurred in the north of France. World War I helped bring Utah into the mainstream of American life. Most Utah servicemen got to return home early. Utahns became disillusioned with the formal peace treaty ending the war.

    Generations of Filipinos have served in and alongside the U.S. Armed Forces. "The Philippine Assembly" created the Philippine National Guard with the intent to join the American Force. Philippine participation in World War I was also relatively minor compared with other Asian countries. Regardless, Filipinos were aware of the war and wanted to participate.

Most Texans agreed with the decision of the United States to remain neutral and not intervene in European affairs. Texans who were in Europe at the start of the war immediately made preparations to return home. Most Texans, however, were focused on a war closer to home.

    After joining the War, Illinois provided more than around 300,000 recruits for the United States military during the war. A number of those Illinois men and women were playing an active role in World War 1 long before the United States entered the conflict. Some were Red Cross nurses or welfare workers. Illinois gave 351,153 men to the army and navy of the United States during the war. Out of every twelve men in the army one was from Illinois.

    The Michigan Guard merged with members of the Wisconsin Guard to form the 32nd Infantry Division. The 32nd was to write many glorious pages in American history in both world wars. It soon became known as America's toughest fighting unit. 186,000 Michigan soldiers served in World War 1.

    Over 100,000 Virginians served in WWI. Over 3,700 died from either disease, combat, or training accidents.

    In early December 1917, the Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 117th Military Police Company had already spent two months in France.
