  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand Was Assassinated

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand Was Assassinated
    19 year old, Gavrillo Princip assassinated the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand. Gavrillo was apart of a Serbian nationalist group called the Black Hand. Ferdinand wasn't the only one assassinated, his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg was also killed by the same terrorist group. Both Ferdinand and Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo. Their assassinations sparked a series of events that eventually led up to World War 1.

    Austria Declares War On Serbia
    One month after the Archduke was assassinated, Austria declared war against Serbia. Austria gave Serbia an ultimatum but Serbia rejected it. Serbia's actions did not make the Austrians very happy, so they went to war. This leads to the beginning of the First World War.

    4 days after Austria declared war on Serbia, Austria's ally, Germany decides to declare war on Russia. This same day, France started to mobilize troops to help out Serbia.

    2 days after Germany declared war on Russia, Germany soon declares war on France and also invades neutral Belgium. Belgium sends Germany an ultimatum saying that they should leave but Germany rejects it.

    Russia and Germany fought in a battle called The Battle of Tannenburg. It lasted from August 26th to August 30th of 1914. The battle resulted in the almost complete destruction of the Russian Second Army and the suicide of its commanding general, Alexander Samsonov.

    The Battle of Gallipoli, also know as the Gallipoli Campaign, lasted from February 17th, 1915 until January 9th, 1916. The Gallipoli Campaign was a failed attempt by the allied powers to control the sea route from Europe to Russia.

    On May 5th, 1917, a German U-boats sinks one the fastest moving British cruise liners called the RMS Lusitania. The British ship was trying to go from New York to Liverpool. England. There were about 1,959 men, women, and children on this boat and around 1,195 died, including 123 Americans.

    Zimmermann Telegram
    The Zimmermann Telegram is what help Mexico become allies with Germany. Germany wanted to side with Mexico incase of war between the US and Germany. Mexico wasn't going to do this for "free" so Germany promised they would return the "lost provinces" of Texas and almost the rest of the American Southwest. Mexico stills declines this offer and things start to uproar.

    The Treaty Of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles was one of the main peace treaties that ended WW1. One of the biggest points in this treaty said that Germany had had to take responsibility for all damage and losses of the war. So basically this entire war was being blamed on Germany. Also, many German people lost pride in their country because they were embarrassed about the outcome of the war. The Treaty of Versailles was officially signed on June 28th, 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of the Archduke.
