The United States troops landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from Japanese control. This island would provide a staging area for attacks needing to be carried out on the Japanese main islands. -

VE day, or Victory in Europe day, is a holiday celebrated to mark the official surrender of Nazi Germany's armed forces. -
Dropping of the Atomic Bombs
President Harry S. Truman ordered that the 5-ton atomic bomb be used. On August 6, 1945 the Enola Gay dropped this 5-ton bomb on Hiroshima hoping to force an unconditional surrender. -
