    Andrew John Fisher served in France with the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1882. He quit school in the eighth grade to pursue a trade. He was the eighth generation U.S. citizen. His family was from Germany and that is where Army service took him into World War 1.

    Trench foot is an infection in the feet caused by wet, cold, and unsanitary conditions. Men stood for long hours in waterlogged trenches. The feet would gradually go numb and the skin would turn red or blue. If not treated, trench foot could cause in need of amputation. During the winter of 1914-15 over 20,000 men in the British Army were treated for trench foot.

When the body suffered from Typhoid fever there would be restricted intake of food and water which meant that the victims were extremely dehydrated and underwent excruciating pain.

    Andrew Fisher was 35 when he entered the Army. A book was published after the war and the title of it was History of the 26th Engineers in the World War. The whole entire organization was composed of volunteers, not draftees. For hospitals and frontline, skilled tradesmen and engineers were provided to sanitize.

    Andrew Fisher was in company C one of 6 companies in the 36th engineers. When the regiment landed in France Company C was sent immediately to provide a clean water supply to a 6,000-bed hospital and to build a number of barracks. Later on Company C was sent to Saint Inan (ph) to receive gas training.
