The heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was assassinated in Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist group called The Black Hand. Austria Hungary then sent a referendum to Serbia, they did not comply. -

Austria Hungary declares war on Serbia which has an alliance with Russia, who is in the Entente. -

After prolonged fighting and a failed counteroffensive the Germans realize the war cannot be won and agrees on an Armistice on Nov. 11 .1918. Later the Treaty of Versailles put harsh terms on Germany setting the stage for a radical change.
