In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry on a steamer ship came to Tokoyo Harbor. Japan was a closed country that denied all access to the outer world to its ports. After about a year of negotiations, Japan signed a treaty with America. This treaty gave access to trade with Japan. -

Secretary of State William Seward bought Alaska from Russia. America has piad $7.2 million for Alaska. Many people thought that there was no point to buy an icebox, but that icebox turned up to be a rich land with natural resources. -

The French wanted to avenge its humiliating defeat by the German. They wanted to take away some of the German states to avenge. During this defeart they lost Alsace-Lorraine. The French people wanted to regain Alsace-Lorraine. -

By the year of 1914 Germany had the biggest navy after Britain. It also had the most troops at that time. -
Major Alliances
The two major alliances are the Triple Entente and Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente was made up of France, Russia, and Great Britian. The Triple Alliance was made up of Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary. -
Assassination of Franz Ferdinand and His Wife, Sophie
When Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie went for a routine visit to Sarajevo, they were killed by a couple of young Bosnians. The young Bosnians were ethnic Serbs who believed that Bosnia belongs to Serbia and viewed Ferdinand as a tyrant. -
German's Blank Check to Austria-Hungary
The black check was a telegram that offered Gemany's support to Austria-Hungary if Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. -
World War l Begins
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia for not cooperating in the investigation of the assassination. -
Other Allies Join the War
The news of the war and quarrel quickly spread. In early August Russia mobilized to help Serbia in the war with Austria-Hungary. Germany declared war against Russia because it declared war on Austria-Hungary. Then France, Russia's ally, declares war on Germany. On the very next day Germany declared war on Belgium to invade France. Great Britain imediately declares war on Germany becuase both Belgium and France were allies with Great Britain. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
On May 7, 1915, ship Lusitania was torpedoed by a German u-boat. More than 1,200 people we sunk among them there were 128 Americans. Eventually America declared war on Germany as an effect of the sinking of the Lusitania. -
Zimmerman Telegram
In Januart 1917 the Zimmerman telegram was sent by Germans to Mexico proposing an alliance. If United States would declare war on Germany, then Mexico should declare war on America, and if German has the victory then Mexico can get back Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The British intercepted the Telegram and gave it to American authorities. -
Germany Resumes Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
Germany promised America that it would stop the unrestricted warfare. Later that year, 1916, Germans sunk an unarmed French passenger ship. Then again Gremans pledged in the Sussex Pledge to stop sinking unarmed ships. This pledge didn't last long because on January 31, 1917, Germany said that it will resume the unrestricted submarine warfare. -
US Enters War.
US entered war because Germany continued with the unrestricted submarine warfare. US brought in new troops which helped bring the war to a faster end. -
New Countries From World War l
Once the war was over, the Versailles conference made new countries. The countries were Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Polland, Polish Corridor, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Irish Free State. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles officially ended the World War 1 and made Germany pay for the restoration. The German people felt as if the treaty was not fair becuase they thought that the other countries wanted to destroy their country. Also It made them feel as if they are not needed and nobody bargained with their opinion -
Rise of Hitler
During World War I, Hitler he was very brave. So he got the status of a war hero with an Iron Cross. Then in 1920 and 1921, Hilter rose as a leader of the Nazi Party. -
Stock Market Crash
When stock market crashed the stock prices fell to a very low point. It was a time during which lots of money was lost. Many bank closed because they simply didn't have money. -
The Great Depression Begins
The Great Depression began because U.S. had a very big demand for crops. In the spring when farmers needed to work on their fields, they bought big tractors to work on fields. This lead them to have debts and to pay them off the farmers needed a great harvet, but that year the harvest was very poor do to the drought. -
Hitler Becomes a Chancellor
Another event that helped Hitler rise to power was when he was appointed to be a chancellor of Germany.
