source The purpose behind the invasion was to find a base near the japanese coast for the Americans. US marine divisions landed on the island and was defended by 23,000 japanese forces. After a month of fighting, the Americans won and wiped out all the Japenese forces. -

source Americans also wanted a base on the island of Okinawa because it was closer to the main part of Japan. The battle took about a week but it was a victory for the Americans. This gain of land helped them to carry out their attacks on Japan. -
