For example, Britain took control of India and the United States' control over the Philippines and Puerto Rico. The formation of alliances played an important part in World War 1. The two major alliances were the Triple Entente (Russia, France, and Britain) and the Triple Alliance (Italy, Germany, and Austria-Hungary). Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife sparked the beginning of World War 1. First, Austria-Hungary gained support from Germany and gave Serbia an ultimatum. Within a month of the assassination, most of Europe had been drawn into the conflict as Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. From there, it only continues to spiral out of control as the rest of the world is dragged into what will become an all out war. -
Germany's Blank Check Assurance
After the assassination of the archduke and the duchess, Austria-Hungary came to Germany asking for their support against Serbia. As Germany has always been known to favor Austria-Hungary, they gave them their full support that is also known as the blank check assurance. -

Germany's Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
Unrestricted submarine warfare was first introduced in the beginning of World War 1 when the area around the British Isles was declared a war zone by Germany. Following the singing of the Lusitania, Great Britain and America called for a restraint on the use of Germany's submarine warfare. However, Germany decided to overlook it and continued to use unrestricted submarine warfare. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
A German U-boat torpedoed into a British liner and sank the Lusitania. There were 1100 casualties, 120 of them were Americans. Although America hadn't entered the war yet, This played a major role in turning public opinion against Germany not just in the United States, but all over the world. -
Zimmerman Note
The Zimmerman Note was a diplomatic communication that proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico, It was issued from the German Foreign Office. It was created in preparation for America entering the war against Germany. -
The United States Enters World War 1
After the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman note, the United States votes to declare war on Germany. Although the president declared neutrality at first, when German U-boats attacked Britain, it resulted in America getting caught in the crossfire. They were forced to get involved, thrusting themselves head first into the war. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty that officially ended World War 1. Signed in Paris, France, the Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to own up to all of their mistakes in World War 1. Germany was treated poorly afterwards because virtually all of the blame was placed on them. With Germany treated as the scapegoat, this initiates the events that lead to World War 2.
