The Archduke of Austria and his wife Sophie were killed while visiting Serbia. The goal of this asssassination was for Serbia to break away from Austria-Hungary. This started World War I. -

Russia mobilizes its army to get ready and fight against Austria-Hungary. Because they attacked their ally, Serbia. -

Germany invaded Belgium beginning the first world war. Germany violated Belgium's neutrality. -
Lusitania Sinks
A German submarine sinks their passenger liner Lusitania. The ship had 1,198 people and 128 of them were Americans. -
First Tanks
The British bring the first tanks into a battle at the battle of Delville Wood. They broke through barbed wire well and cleared paths, but they failed at being a great weapon. -
Submarines are back
Germnay lifted the restriction on underwater warfare after the sinking of some submarines. This draws the United States into the war. -
United States enters the war
Congress authorized a declaration on war against Germany. We enter on Britain and France's side. Some Americans were upset that we were joining the war becuase they wanted to stay neutral. -
Germany and Russia Peace Treaty
The Germans sign a peach treaty with the new government of Russia. The treaty gave Germany a lot of landof what is now Ukraine and Poland. -
Battle of Cantigny
This was the first major offense war for the Americans. This leads to new and bigger battles against the Germans. -
Treaty of Versailles
This is the document that ended World War I. It ended the fighting between Germany and the allied powers. It was signed exactly five years after the Archduke was assassinated beginning the war.
