Rape of Nanking (Nanking Massacre)
The Nanking Massacre is when the Japanese Imperialist Army invaded Nanking, China, and killed 300,000 people. After the victory at Shanghai during the Sino-Japanese War, Japan targeted Nanking next. At least one-third of Nanking's buildings were looted, and the city was left in ruins. After this massacre, it would take decades for Nanking to recover. -
German Blitzkrieg
Germany used a tactic called blitzkrieg was meant to disorganize enemy forces with quick moveable forces and concentrated firepower. Germany used this because they wanted a quick war. This tactic was used at the beginning of the war. -
Battle of Britain
On September 7, 1940, 300 German bombers raided London in what would be the first of 57 consecutive nights of bombing. Germany did this because they wanted to take over the whole war, including Britain. After the bombing, Britain was in ruins and many people were homeless. -
Pearl Harbor
In 1941, Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor, a port near Hawaii. Japan did this because the government thought that taking over nearby land would solve their economic problems. After the attack, America decided to declared war against Japan an joined the Allies. -
Bataan Death March
After Filipino and American troops surrendered to the Japanese at the Bataan Penisula on the Philippine island of Luzon, the troops were forced to walk to prison camps. Thousands died in what is called the Bataan Death March. Japanese did this to gain land from neighboring territories, including the Philippines. After this, America avenged its defeat by recapturing parts of the Philippines in 1945. The leader of the Japanese invasion forces was killed by the firing squad on April 3, 1946. -
Battle of Midway
Th Battle of Midway was the US fighting Japan in a sea and air battle. America did this because of revenge for the attack on Pearl Harbor. America won the battle and defeated Japan. -
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was the act of Jewish resistance on the Germans in Warsaw, Poland. New forces of the Nazis took out each bunker in the consecration camps one by along with the revolters. The Jews wanted their freedom from the Nazis. This led to many revolts across many German consecration camps all over Nazis-occupied Eastern Europe. -
Allied Invasion of Italy
On September 3, 1943, the Allies land at Calabria, the "toe" of Italy, and started to invade parts of Europe. On the day of landing, the Italian government decided to surrender and made a public announcement on September 8. The Allies did this to take down the Axis of Powers, which included Italy. -
D-Day(Normandy Invasion)
The Normandy Invasion, or Operation Overlord, is when the Allies invaded Western Europe with American, British, and Canadian forces landing on the beaches of France's Normandy region. The Allies did this to mislead the German armies and take down Hitler and the Axis of Powers. In the end, the Allies won and liberated France. -
Operation Thunderclap (Bombing of Dresden)
Operation Thunderclap, or the Bombing of Dresden, is when the Allies bombed Dresden, Germany. 135,000 people were killed and the city was in rubble and flames. The Allies did this to take down Germany, the leader of the Axis of Powers and this city specifically to stop the Nazi War Machine. Now Germany was on the verge of surrendering. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
On February 19, 1945, American invaded Iwo Jima, an Island under Japan's Empire. American did this for revenge and to take down the Axis of Powers, Japan being one of them. America won and nearly all Japanese defenders there were killed or missing. -
VE Day
VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, is when the Germans surrender to the Allies and World War 2 is over. Germany was losing a lot of soldiers and Hitler killed himself, which is why the German army surrendered. Both Great Britain and the United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day on May 8, and after the end of the war, over 2 million German citizens were caught by Russia and held captive. -
VJ Day
VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, is when Japan surrendered in World War 2. After many casualties, Japan couldn't handle it anymore. Finally America was done with World War 2. -
Dropping of the Atomic Bomb
To end the war against Japan, the US dropped the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan, which instantly killed 80,000 people, and later on much more died due to wounds and radiation poisoning. A second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki and that killed 40,00 people. As a result, Japan surrendered. -
Battle of the Bugle
On December 1944, The Germany army used a surprise blitzkrieg in the Ardennes Mountains in the Western Front. Hitler did this because he thought splitting the Allies would weaken the enemy armies. As a result, the Allies fought back and defeats the German army.
