World War I begins as Austria declares war of Serbia
Serbia was trying to make a unified Slavic nation but, the Austrians did not want their Slavic population to rebel, so the Austrians took over the highly Slavic populated Bosnia & Herzegovinia. The Serbs didn't like this. The Black Hand, a Serbian terrorist organization in Bosnia shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife while they were going through the streets. Austria declared war on Serbia. -
U.S. Enters the war
After Germany sank a submarine, using unrestricted submarine warfare, that had United States passengers the United States got mad. Germany then continued to do this, and sank 3 more submarines with United States passengers. Arthur Zimmermann of Germany also pissed the United States off because the United States intercepted a telegram telling Mexico to help Germany, and Germany will reconquer colonies back from the United States. This was the last straw, and the United States entered. -
Armistice signed as Allies defeat Central Powers
The Central powers were closing down on Paris again, and were at the Marne River. With the help of a lot of fresh United States troops the Allies won and signed an armistice in order to have time to make the real treaty. -
Gandhi leads Indian camapaign of civil disobedience
Ghandi became the leader of the independence movement in India after the Rowlatt Acts and the Amristar Massacre. In order to protest the Indians didn't obey unjust laws and didn't buy British goods like cloth (instead make your own cloth) and salt (go to the sea and collect your own). This took a toll on the British economy so, the Indians were given limited self rule. -
Mustafa Kemal transforms Turkey into Republic
After the fall of the Ottoman empire, Mustafa kemal was a great commander that lead the Turks to a victory over Greece. The Turks overthrew the last Ottoman sultan and Kemal became president. Kemal's goal was to create a modern nation. -
Mao Zedong heads Long March
Mao and the Communist party allied with Sun and the Nationalist party. The Nationalists betrayed the Communists, which resulted in civil war. Mao set the Communists up in the hills but, when the bigger Nationalist army came and surrounded them. The Communists went on a Long March and settled in caves.
