    World War I

War fought in Europe at the start of the 20th century. It was started by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire by a Serbian Nationalist. The war brought all the major industrial nations of Europe against each other resulting in close to 20 million casualties. Although the war ended in 1918, its peace settlement would cripple the German economy and lead to lingering hostilities that would lead to World War II.
