What happend? Hitler launched his armies eastward in a massive invasion on the Soviet Union; 3 million German soldiers, 150 divisions and three thousand tanks diminished across the frontier into Soviet territory. Why? Hitler wanted to defeat communism in the USSR and take over land and use the Soviet people for slave labor. Effects: It forced Nazi Germany to fight a two sided war. -

What happend? A barrage of Japanese fighter planes attacked Pearl Harbor, Killing more than 2,000 soldiers and destroying 20 battleships and almost 200 planes. Why? America had an embargo on Japan and they wanted America to join the war so they could show America was weak. What happend? WWII naval battle, fought pretty much with mostly aircraft, which the U.S. destroyed Japan's first line carrier strength and most of its naval pilots. Why? What happend? British bombers raided Hamburg, Germany by night, adn Americans vigoriously bombed it by day in it's own "Blitz Week". Why? Britain had suffered the deaths of 167 civililans as a wage of German bombing raids. Effects: There was over 17,000 bombs dropped and over 30,000 civilians wered killed along with 280,00 buildings being destroyed. -
D-Day
What happend? 156,00 American, British, and Canadian forces landed on a 50 mile stretch of conjoined beaches on the coast of France. Why? Amercia and Great Britan wanted to do a major invasion of Germany the controlled France across the English channel. Effects: Allies captured the French port of Cherbourg, also made German soldiers retreat and finally liberated Paris -

What happend? it was just a plan that was thought up of to bomb Berlin. Why? It would shatter German Morale by the killing of several. Effects: Nothing due to the plan being diminished. -

VE-Day
What happend? Victory in Europe day is the day when German troops surrendered and the Allied forces earned a great victory.Why? The main worry of most German soldiers was to elude the grasp of Soviet forces, to keep from being held prisoner. Effects: World War II ends and the Allied powers rejoice in victory. -
Dropping the Atomic Bombs
What happend? The U.S. dropped the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Japan. Why? President Truman warned by his advisors that any attempt to invade Japan would result in horrific American Casualties, ordered that the new weapons shall be used immediately to end the war. Effects: The drops of atomic bombs ended World War II but many thought that it had sparked the Cold War. Also effects of radiation still plays a factor in Japan's select cities that were hit. -
VJ Day
What happend? Japan had surrendered unconditionally to the Allied Powers. Why? Japan had been devasted by the atomic bomb droppings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Effects: Parts of the end of WWII known as "Victory Over Japan" -

What happend? American troops invaded Okinawa in order to eventually invade Japan.Why? American medium bombers could reach the Japanese home island from Okinawa, and it's seizure would sever the remaining southwest supply lines to Japan. Effects: Caused Japan to lose 77,000 soldiers and the Allies suffered well over 65,000 casualties
