Golding's Birth
William Golding was born on Septemeber 19th, 1911 in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. He was raised in a 14th century house located next to a graveyard. -
Golding's Teaching Career
Golding decided to follow in his father's footsteps and start teaching English and philosophy at Bishop Wordsworth's school in Salisbury. He had quit for a time to serve in the Royal Navy and fight in World War 2. -
Graduation
Golding graduated from Oxford with with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in education. From there, he worked as a writer, actor, and producer. -
Family
In 1939, William Golding married Ann Brookfield and had two children. They were supportive to him his whole life. -
Lord of the Flies
In 1954, after 21 rejections, Golding finally got his book "Lord of the Flies" published. It is about a group of boys who turn against each other on an island they crashed on. The novel has been considered a classic and is taught in classrooms all over. -
Golding's play
On of Golding's plays was called "The Brass Butterfly". It turned out to be his only original stage play. -
The End of Golding's Teaching Career
Golding retired from teaching in 1963. In that year, Peter Brook created a movie from his classic novel "Lord of the Flies." -

On June 19th, 1993 William Golding died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. He still lives on through his wife and two children.
