Birth
William Golding was born on September 19, 1911, in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England -
Early Start
On September 12, 1916, William started his education at an early age, he went to primary school at Marlborough Grammar School where his father was a schoolmaster. -
The start of Literature
William became very interested in Literature and started writing. He wrote a novel at age 12, but unfortunately, it was unsuccessful. This was only the start. -
Journey to College
At age 19, William joined the college at Brasenose which is located in Oxford. He spent his first two years of college studying science, then grew interested in literature again. -
Becoming of writing
William then started into literature in 1934, now the age of 23, and created a book that was based on all the poems he wrote. This book was the first book that William ever got published. -
Teaching start
After graduating and writing his book, he became interested in teaching others, so William became a teacher at Bishop Wordsworth's School in Salisbury. He decided to teach English and Philosophy. -
Marriage
4 years later, William got married to Ann Golding. Instead of a huge wedding, they did their vows in their own home. -
New Life
In April, William and his wife Ann had their first baby. He was named David William Golding -
End of teaching, into war
1 year later after William's marriage, he decided to leave teaching for a short time to help fight in W11 as a Royal Navy. -
Back home
William went back home to his wife and now toddler, David, in 1945 after the war had ended. -
Another new life!
William and Ann had their second baby in May, They named her Judy Golding, Judy was her short name for Judith. -
Back to before
Soon after William returned from WW2 and had his baby, Judith. He joined teaching again and started his Literature journey again. -
Lord of the Flies
After many rejections after rejections, William published his second book, his book was called Lord of the Flies, which was the most acclaimed novel at the time. Also still popular till this day. -
Retirement
After his many years of teaching, William retired in 1962. -
Nobel
At the age of 73 William Golding's accomplishments earned him a huge award, this award was the Nobel Prize for Literature. -
Death
Sadly, William Golding passed away in 1993. He died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall. He was buried in the parish churchyard of Bowerchalke near his former home and the Wiltshire county border with Hampshire and Dorset. He will be forever missed.
