    William Gerald Golding was born in Cornwall, England, in 1911. He lived with both parents, His mother was a strong supporter of the British suffragete movement while his father was a teacher and an ardent advocate of rationalism.

    William attended Barsenose College at Oxford in 1930 and spent 2 years studying science despite his fathers views and beliefs. In his 3rd year he switched to the literature program following his true interests. He finally graduated in 1935 from Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a diploma in Education.

    From 1935 to 1939 William would work as a writier, actor, and produce in an unfashionable part of london but would pay his bills with a job as a social worker. In 1939 William began teaching English and Philosophy in Salisbury at Bishop Wordsworth's school.
