William Goldberg was born.
He was born in Saint Columb minor, Cornwall, England. His mother’s name was Mildred and his father’s name was Alex. -
First attempt at writing a novel.
Only being 12 he was unsuccessful. -
Attended Brasenose College at Oxford University.
Started by reading for a science degree, but changed course after two years. He took a second class degree in English. -
Gained a Diploma in Education
He started teaching at Bishop Wordsworth’s School in Salisbury. Golding’s experience teaching unruly young boys would later serve as inspiration for his novel Lord of the Flies. -
Temporarily abandoned teaching.
He joined the Royal Navy and fought in World War 2. He spent roughly 6 years on a boat. -
Golding went back to teaching and writing.
After the war golding went back to teaching and writing. -
Golding published his first and most acclaimed novel, Lord of the Flies.
Fter 21 rejections, Golding published a book exploring the savage side of human nature as the boys, let loose from the constraints of society, brutally turned against one another in the face of an imagined enemy. -
awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature.
He got this in honor of the book "lord of the flies". He was awarded this 19 years after the book was published. -
A new film version of the Lord of the Flies was released
This created alot of attention for the book. Especially for the new generation of readers. -
William Golding passed.
He was survived by his wife and their two children, David and Judith. After Golding passed away, his completed manuscript for The Double Tongue was published posthumously.
